The Operations & Planning Engineer is an entry level position in operations and planning engineering. The position is responsible for supporting transmission operations and planning engineering functions. The individual in the position will assist in maintaining transmission system models and associated one-line drawings and maps. The position will assist and learn how to perform reliability assessments for real time, near term, and long-term planning while working closely with the Reliability Coordinator(s) and neighboring Transmission Operators (TOP’s).
This position reports to the System Engineering Manager and will develop working relationships with multiple engineering and operations team members. Essential Functions
Assists with the detailed coordination, preparation, and delivery of WECC base cases
Assists in performing powerflow studies
Provides support for the PSO-Transmission operators during real-time system events
Assists in performing operating and planning assessments
Assists in maintaining NERC and WECC compliance reporting and documentation
Participates in Colorado Coordinated Planning Group/Foothills planning and operations groups
Supports model development, testing, maintenance, and validation efforts for Real Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA) tool
Develops written transmission system reports and analysis
Collaborates closely with internal team members to seek guidance and input regarding activities
Maintains regular and reliable attendance
Performs other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering from an accredited four-year college
Strong analytical skills
Ability to successfully complete Platte River's critical infrastructure protection (CIP) and other mandatory training required to maintain security clearance and other status
Ability to collaborate with and desire to seek input from internal team members; skilled in seeking and valuing diverse opinions and ideas
Ability to multi-task, shifting focus to emerging priorities as needed
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form
Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Ability to apply problem solving, critical thinking, and independent decision-making skills, with consistent attention to detail
Ability to make sound decisions with consideration for potential impacts of decisions to the overall organization
Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy
Related engineering work experience
Understanding of PSS/E power system analysis software
Knowledge of NERC/WECC Reliability Standards
Experience with Mathcad
Understanding of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI design and construction codes
