Owned and operated by the City of Crawfordsville, CEL&P provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to over 10,000 meters while reinvesting revenues back into the community. With local accountability, strong customer service, and a focus on efficiency and sustainability, CEL&P delivers public power that puts the needs of Crawfordsville’s residents and businesses first.
Company History
Founded in 1890, CEL&P was created to provide electric service to the residents of Crawfordsville. At a time when electricity was still new to most communities, Crawfordsville took the forward-thinking step of establishing its own publicly owned power company. Over the decades, CEL&P has expanded and modernized its system, building substations, transmission lines, and distribution infrastructure to meet the city’s growing needs. As part of the public power tradition, CEL&P has remained locally owned and operated, reinvesting revenues back into infrastructure and the community rather than paying dividends to outside shareholders. Today, more than 135 years later, CEL&P continues to provide reliable, affordable electricity while adapting to new technologies, efficiency programs, and sustainability initiatives.
